Counting straws
Students count out the corresponding quantity of straws with the matching numeral. I always double check that their zero has no straws in it but it’s still a number. This is often a misconception of young mathematicians.
Students order their numbers 1-10 and they match the correct quantity to the numerical symbol. I especially like that the numbers are the actual shapes of the written numeral and I’ve found it really assists the child in writing their numbers as well.
There are two versions of this favorite fall work. The first is 1-10 and the next is 11-20 depending on where the child is in their counting and carnality. There are a few concepts practiced in this work. The first is matching the number on the leaf to the number word on the clothespin (fine motor). The students count out the correct quantity using “snow” which is just really packing foam.
Kindergartners are matching gems to the pictures on each card. If you look closely these cards can get to 100!

Sometimes kindergartners find clever ways to fill in all the missing pieces: place all the tens first, count backwards, forwards, etc… They are such problem solvers!
